Most plantation drives fail not because of bad saplings โ but because roots suffocate before the tree has a chance to grow. Urban soils in Gujarat are frequently damaged: compacted, alkaline, nutrient-locked, biologically dead. A tree planted into such soil is like a patient asked to recover in a polluted room without ventilation.
Ahmedabad and much of Gujarat present alkaline soil conditions, often compounded by high-TDS borewell water. Nutrients may be present but chemically locked. The approach must begin with the soil itself โ with what the sapling meets the moment it enters the ground.
Living soil (left) vs dead urban soil (right) โ same depth, same photograph. The difference between a tree that thrives and one that struggles for years.
Physics
Structure & Air
Texture, aggregates, pore space. A root cannot use nutrients if it cannot breathe. Structure is often more important than fertiliser โ especially in compacted urban sites.
Chemistry
pH & Nutrients
In Gujarat's alkaline soils, iron, manganese, and zinc may be present but chemically locked. Understanding pH is the prerequisite to correcting everything else.
Biology
Living Networks
Mycorrhizal fungi, organic carbon, micro-organisms. Soil is a living community. A city of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and earthworms. Restore it, and the roots do the rest.
Enriched Planting Medium
Demai Greens formulation. 5 kg bags. Sustained-release. Designed for fast root establishment in dry, alkaline, semi-arid conditions. Not a fertiliser โ a foundation.
- Organic compost โ slow food for soil biology
- Leaf mould โ structure and moisture retention
- Biochar โ long-term carbon and pore space
- Mycorrhizal bio-inputs โ root colonisation from day one
- Neem cake โ natural pest deterrence and nitrogen
- Coarse grit โ aeration in compacted and clay-heavy sites
- pH buffer โ calibrated for Ahmedabad's alkaline conditions
What every custodian should know.
Knowledge shared freely โ before, during, and after every order from Demai Greens.
Water deeply, not daily
Deep, infrequent watering trains roots downward into cooler soil. Shallow daily wetting keeps roots near the surface โ vulnerable to every heat event and drought.
The mulch ring
2โ3 inches of mulch around the tree, kept away from the trunk. Retains moisture, moderates temperature, feeds soil biology. The most effective single intervention after correct planting.
Read the leaf
Yellowing leaves are a message. Which leaves, which season, which species โ the answers together reveal the cause. Diagnosis before intervention, always.
Respect the branch collar
Every cut just outside the branch collar โ the tree's natural wound-closure zone. Never cut flush. Never top. Never hurry a pruning decision.
Keep the register
Species, location, size, health, maintenance history, next action. A simple record kept honestly is the most valuable asset in any greening programme over time.
Native species first
A species evolved for this climate and soil will always outperform a transplant. Diversity across species reduces every risk simultaneously.
