A tree in the city is not merely decoration. It is living infrastructure. It cools streets and compounds, softens harsh built surfaces, filters dust, slows rain runoff, supports birds and insects, stores carbon, and creates memory in a neighbourhood. A mature tree is a public asset even when it stands on private land — because its shade, air, habitat, and beauty extend beyond property boundaries.
In Ahmedabad, where summer afternoons cross 45°C, a mature canopy can reduce surface temperatures by 10–15°C. Each tree captures 1–2 kg of particulate dust annually. A single tree intercepts 500–1,000 litres of stormwater. This is not poetry. It is measurable infrastructure performance — and it compounds every year the tree lives.
The mistake in most urban greening programmes is that trees are treated as objects to be installed — procured, transported, planted, photographed, and entered into a report. A tree is not a bench. It is a living system that must establish roots, manage water, build tissue, and adapt to its site. If after-care is absent, the plantation remains a ceremony, not a contribution.
A tree does not ask who will sit in its shade before it gives shade.

Steward, not planter
A planter works for one day. A custodian watches the tree through seasons — counting survival, shade, root health, soil condition, and long-term usefulness. We grow custodians as readily as we grow saplings.

The first 90 days
Everything that determines whether a tree lives or dies happens underground in the first three months. Root establishment, transplant shock recovery, soil colonisation. This is where the outcome is decided — not at planting, not at five years.
The survival audit
Return to a plantation site one year after. Count what lives. Ask why what died, died. The answers are almost always the same: wrong species, poor soil, no after-care. The audit is not criticism. It is the beginning of learning.
The three-year commitment
A tree requires intensive support for its first three years. After that, most native species largely sustain themselves. The investment is not in more trees. It is in the knowledge that follows one tree into the ground.

We are a nursery first. We grow native saplings in living soil at Village Demai and supply them to institutions, businesses, farms, and communities across Gujarat. We also supply the enriched planting medium that makes the difference between a ceremony and a contribution. Knowledge is shared freely — before, during, and after the sale.

What is growing next. Ornamental and flowering plants for indoor and patio use — available now in limited quantities. A subscription service for living plants in offices and homes is being developed. Artisanal leafy greens and seasonal vegetables grown in RO water, for Ahmedabad's urban market, will follow. These are not promises. They are the next branches of the same tree.

What we will not do
The standards we hold — and the orders we will respectfully decline.
We will do due diligence on where our saplings go. Not every inquiry becomes an order. We are not a commodity supplier. What we ask before accepting an order is simple: is there constructive intent to contribute — not just plant for an event, not just photograph a ceremony, not just count saplings in a report?
We will decline orders where the planting site, soil conditions, or after-care plan makes survival unlikely. We will suggest a smaller, better-prepared plantation over a larger, poorly-planned one. We will share what we know freely — even with those who never buy from us.
Wrong species for the site
We will not supply a Banyan for a narrow roadside or a water-loving species for a site with no irrigation plan. The species must fit the place.
No soil preparation
A sapling planted into compacted urban soil without preparation will struggle. We will say so — and offer the living soil alongside.
Purely ceremonial intent
If an order is for one event, one photograph, and no follow-through, we will ask the honest question first. The sapling deserves a custodian, not a cameo.
Inadequate root space
A large canopy tree in a 2×2 foot planting pit will not thrive. We will specify what a tree actually needs — and decline if that cannot be provided.

The nursery at Village Demai, approximately 100 kilometres from Ahmedabad, is being built not as a warehouse of saplings but as a living record of what grows here, how it establishes, and what semi-arid Gujarat can support with the right preparation.
Ahmedabad's tree-care reality is shaped by heat, dust, dry winds, alkaline soil, and long dry seasons. The best tree here is not always the fastest-growing. Long-term stability, canopy quality, root compatibility, and survival with modest inputs matter more than instant height.

Most urban trees are harmed not by climate but by misunderstanding. The damage is quiet and continuous. A tree may look acceptable for years while its root environment is degrading beneath it. These are the mistakes we see most often.

The foundation
Soil is the tree's second body. Feed the soil, and the soil supports the tree.
Urban soil is frequently damaged. Construction rubble, cement dust, excess salts, compacted layers, poor organic matter. A tree planted into such soil is like a patient asked to recover in a polluted room without ventilation. Most plantation drives do not fail because of bad saplings. They fail because the roots suffocate before the tree has a chance to grow.
Ahmedabad and much of Gujarat present alkaline soil conditions, often compounded by high-TDS borewell water. Nutrients may be present but chemically locked. The approach must begin with the soil itself — with what the sapling meets the moment it enters the ground.

Structure & Air
Texture, aggregates, pore space. A root cannot use nutrients well if it cannot breathe or grow. Structure is often more important than fertiliser — especially in compacted urban sites.

Alkalinity, nutrient availability, salinity. In Gujarat's soils, iron, manganese, and zinc may be present but locked. Understanding pH is the prerequisite to correcting everything else.

What every custodian should know
Water deeply, not daily
Deep, infrequent watering trains roots downward into cooler, moister soil. Shallow daily wetting keeps roots near the surface — vulnerable to heat and drought.
The mulch ring
2–3 inches of mulch around the tree, kept away from the trunk. Retains moisture, moderates temperature, feeds soil biology. The most effective single intervention after correct planting.
Read the leaf
Yellowing leaves are a message. Which leaves, which season, which species, what recent site changes — the answers together reveal the cause. Diagnosis before intervention, always.
Respect the branch collar
Every cut just outside the branch collar. This is the tree's natural wound-closure zone. Never cut flush. Never top. Never hurry a pruning decision.
Keep the register
Species, location, size, health, maintenance history, next action. A simple record kept honestly is the most valuable asset in any greening programme.
